  • Term life insurance makes sense – a cost-efficient solution, term life typically offers the most insurance coverage for the money. Benefits can be used to pay mortgages and debts, final expenses, living expenses, childcare or education expenses, a spouse’s retirement, or even to make a charitable donation.
  • Term life insurance is affordable – premiums are based on your sex, smoking status, and age – so the younger you are when you apply, the lower your rate will be.
  • A Living Benefit is included at no additional cost – if you’re diagnosed with a terminal illness with less than a year to live, the plan makes available a 50% advance of your coverage tax-free – to a maximum of $75,000 – provided you’re under age 83 and your policy has been in effect for at least two years.

Rates are locked in for 10 years. If you’re a Canadian resident between the ages of 18 and 70, you can apply for coverage from $50,000 up to $150,000 in increments of $25,000. Once you’re approved your premiums won’t change for 10 years. And as long as premiums are paid, coverage remains in effect – only you can cancel your policy.

Coverage is guaranteed renewable to age 85, even if your health changes. Before age 70 and with no medical exam, you’ll have the option to convert your term life plan to a permanent life policy, for coverage throughout your life at a fixed level premium, as long as your policy is in effect.

  • Could life insurance play a role in paying the taxes incurred when capital property is transferred from one generation to the next?
